SCG Promotes Women in Trucking within its Owner Operator Base

SCG The Select Carrier Group (www.selectscg.com) is committed to promoting an environment that reflects diversity at all levels.  In support of that endeavor, SCG has elected to become a member of the non-profit Women in Trucking (WIT) organization by joining on a corporate level and encouraging its Owner Operators to join as well.

Women In Trucking was established in 2007 to encourage the employment of women in the trucking industry, promote their accomplishments and minimize obstacles faced by women in trucking. The organization is an active group that finds opportunities to promote the accomplishments of women in the industry.

Women in Trucking has a twofold goal in mind. The first goal is to promote the trucking industry to women as an employment opportunity – in all aspects:  driving, recruiting, dispatching, even as company owners.  The second goal is help the industry become more “female friendly”.  As trucking as historically been a male dominated industry, many industries lag behind in offering products and services geared to women.  This is something that WIT members like Dr. Lenora Hardee of Navistar-International are addressing.  Dr. Hardee helps design cabs of International trucks to be more ergonomically correct for women, incorporating things like a closer dash board and lower bunks.  WIT believes that by providing a greater understanding of some of the special challenges women face on the road that this understanding will lead to change.

Membership support helps WIT provide the needed resources to encourage women to become employed in the trucking industry.  SCG will extend discounted memberships of $15/year to their Owner Operators who wish to join under the SCG corporate account.  All drivers, both female and male, are encouraged to join by contacting Rhonda Bateman at the Columbus Service Center.
